Single Season Walks

In 1998, he drew 162 walks, tying Ted Williams at 2nd place. On September 12, 1998, he set a new NL record of 162 for most walks in a single season. He also leads the major league in intentional walks at 28. When Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's single season home run record in 1961, he even did not draw a single intentional walk during the entire season!

June 24, 1997--He hit the longest home run of his career, 538 feet, which set up a record for the longest home run distance at the KingDome In Seattle. He did to his former USC teammate, Randy Johnson who set his personal record for most strikeouts at 19.

April 14, 1998--He slammed three home runs against Arizona, his 3rd triple-homer in a game during his career.

May 16, 1998--He hit the longest home run of his career, 545 feet, which set up a record for the longest home run distance at Busch Stadium. He has 40 home runs and 87 RBIs in 89 games with the Cardinals.

It was the second time this season he'd hit three homers in a game. It was the 45th time in his career that he has hit more than one homer in a game. Only nine players in major-league history have more multi-homer games. He has 44 home runs and 94 RBIs in 92 games with the Cardinals.

All 47,549 fans with a ticket get a free Big Mac sandwich at McDonald's, but McGwire makes nothing off the promotional connection.

May 23, 1998--All he did on Saturday was belt two more homers, including a three-run blast that traveled 477 feet and snapped a fifth-inning tie to lead St. Louis to an 11-10 victory over the Giants.  The multi-homer effort was the 46th of McGwire's career, tying him with Harmon Killebrew and Mickey Mantle for eighth place on the all-time list. McGwire needs one homer to tie the major-league record for most home runs by June 1st, set by Seattle's Ken Griffey Jr. last year.

May 25, 1998--He set a new record for most home runs before June 1st after hitting his 25th home run of the season.

June 1, 1998--He suffered a back spasm that sidelined him for three games.

June 10, 1998--He is the second fastest to 30 home runs, reaching the mark in the Cardinals' 64th game. In 1928, Babe Ruth hit his 30th in the New York Yankees' 63rd game.

August 11, 1998--His 47th homer came in his 162nd game with the Cardinals, who acquired him July 31, 1997. In that time he has 71 homers, 146 RBIs and 165 walks.

May 4, 1999--He hit a grand-slam homer against the 4-time Cy Young winner, Atlanta's Greg Maddux, hit 12th career grand-slammers.

May 22, 1999--He banged two homers, his 55th career multi-homer. He became one of the three players ever to hit a ball, 484 feet,  out of the Dodger Stadium.

May 22, 1999--He is the only player to reach Big Mac Land. Both times the victim was Gardner, and the shots came exactly one year apart -- in a strange coincidence, McGwire's homer off Gardner on May 27, 1998, also came with one out in the sixth inning before a sellout crowd of 47,549. "It was a day game, too," Gardner said.  The biggest difference is last year's Big Mac landing was No. 21.

July 30, 1999--He slammed No. 38 and broke Babe Ruth's record for homers in a five-season span with No. 495 of his career. He has 257 homers since 1995, breaking the five-year record he shared with Ruth, who hit 256 from 1926-30. He is one away from tying his own record for most homers (219 from 1995-98) in four consecutive seasons.
